COULD HOUSE PLANTS BOOST YOUR MENTAL HEALTH... Investigating plant power.

This is how boring I am... An ideal Sunday for me is a morning walk to the garden centre, a coffee & a look around the cheese plants. Bliss! But my other half does not share this pleasure at all, in fact, she reminds me of the size of our small flat & the 9 (yes 9!) plants already residing in it anytime a potential green addition to the collection is found. But have I got a point? Could it be that our indoor plants are having a significant positive impact on how we feel every day?
Aside from being a proud plant-dad, I also feel much better having some greenery in my 1-bed city centre flat (without a garden or balcony). When green walks are harder to find, it's a great way to feel at one with nature. This isn't just personal experience, it's been proven by PubMed. A systematic review of 42 studies showed that indoor plants affected participants positively, particularly in terms of relaxation & improved brain function. The meta-analyses concluded that, in general, people function better with the presence of indoor plants than the absence of indoor plants, & that people have significantly greater academic achievement when indoor plants are present than when indoor plants are not present. This isn't just due to the positive brain waves created by the green colour, plants improve air quality via photosynthesis. In fact, poor indoor air quality was shown to decrease productivity by 10–15%. Not only are green spaces needed in cities, plants are beneficial in all buildings for people’s health & well-being.
Let's move this away from my indie cacti & hippie cheese plants for a second. What if we can benefit further from our indoor oases. Plants can be a gateway into further passion for cooking fresh, whole food through the growing of herbs & indoor vegetables. Think coriander & chilli's for your fajitas, or tomatoes & basil for your new homemade pizza passion. All this could be the unexplored ticket to boost your mental health, so give it a try! Or feel free to ignore me, I'm not your dad.
