THE OMEGA 3 HYPE EXPLAINED... What is it & how can it benefit me?

You've seen Captain Birdseye banging on about these in his fish fingers. Or that mate, who does triathlons every week & snorts chia seeds, smashes 3 of these every morning. But why? Are they that good? Because it is easily consumable in one small pill, most people don't realise how nutrient dense omega 3 is. It is more than just one nutrient, it's a family of healthy fatty acids with countless positive health claims. So, can these fishy fats benefit you?
You don't really care about which acids are included, you just want to know how they could help you. But in the interest of completing the picture, here they are: ALA, DHA, EPA. They are all considered 'essential' nutrients, meaning we need them to function & can only get them from food or supplements. Omega 3's are present in all sorts of seafood, chia seeds & some nuts, with most experts suggesting food sources of Omega's are easier for our body to absorb than supplements. However, supplements are definitely better than nothing (I take 500mg daily, which is more than enough).
The majority of these benefits are as a result of improved circulation, with some also coming from cell developement. Here are some of the claimed benefits:
Lower blood pressure
Less post-gym soreness
Better focus (although this is very small)
Heart health benefits
Lower depression risk
Lower risk of early Alzheimer's
Slightly reduced cancer risk (mainly breast cancer)
Healthier joints
Seems like a no brainer, right? But some plumsacks have been preaching about mercury levels in fish being detremental for our health. These people should be ignored (or burnt at the stake). A PubMed statistical analysis on this showed a mercury risk to our bodies of less than 0.0001% when taking the daily recommended Omega 3 dose (≈450mg). For context, this is 10,000 times lower than the risk of a fatal car accident.
Among all this scientific chaos, most relevant to us are the heart health, joint health & muscle soreness benefits. They are the main reasons I would agree with 'triathlon bro' for once.
